Internship Textile Circularity

Within the Development Technology team we are looking for an intern/graduation internship with a topic related to Textile Circularity.

Upcycle Vlisco fabric scrap

Location: Helmond, 5 days.

Who are we?

For more than 175 years, Vlisco has been producing very popular, high quality fashion fabrics with embellishments. These fabrics and designs are an essential part of the vibrant West and Central African culture. The Vlisco group portfolio consists of four brands: Vlisco, Woodin, Uniwax and GTP. Design, fashion, creativity, innovation and quality are the overarching brand values.

The Challenge

Vlisco prints huge volumes of cotton fabrics every year. As a result of a complex manufacturing process, we end up generating a lot of scrap at various production stages. These fabrics could contain wide range of dyestuff and embellishments like glitters and paste fit. Vlisco is interested to be a sustainable player in the upcoming future by recycling its fabric waste streams. Currently Vlisco has only 3 waste streams. On short term Vlisco expects to be able to recycle a part of the waste, to make this possible the current waste stream needs to be optimized into >3 streams.

This research project will exist out of two assignments:

1) Research and develop an optimized waste stream within Vlisco.

2) Research and develop a commercially viable process to separate embellishments  and pigments from the cotton fabric, to facilitate cotton recycling chemically.

Core tasks

• Preparation and research through literature study and interviews (internal, external);

• Conducting laboratory trials;

• Setup waste stream workflow and floor plan;

• Documenting the research and its results in a report;

• Making recommendations for implementation;

• Presenting of the results.
